2Hours/2Days…Mt. Bethel Christian Academy Students Succeed!
What a sight to see! Mt. Bethel Christian Academy students reached their goal, and then some. In under 2 hours, the middle schools students measured, packed, sealed, boxed, and loaded 50,550 vitamin-enriched meals to ship to countries around the world. They have successfully stopped hunger-related deaths for 2 days….all by giving of themselves for 2 hours. Proud? You bet they are!

On February 3, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy Will Set Aside 2 Hours to Stop Global Hunger Related Deaths for 2 Days!
By now, most of the MBCA community knows that we are poised to set a record. Inspired by the service example of MBCA student Emily Carden, the 160-student middle school will attempt to package 50,000 vitamin-enriched meals, enough to stop global hunger related deaths for two days. That in itself is a lofty goal, but to add an additional challenge, the students have committed to accomplishing this in 2 hours. 160 students/50,000 meals/2 hours = one meal packed every 6.9 seconds. According to the Stop Hunger Now organization, which will be providing the meal contents and packaging material, this is unprecedented. Never before has any student organization attempted or accomplished such a goal.
In an action packed, frenetic event on Feb. 3, 2012 from 11:00AM-1:00PM, MBCA middle school students will come together in service to meet this timed challenge. The assembly process combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packages. These meal packages will then be shipped around the world to support school feeding programs and crisis relief. The food stores easily, transports quickly and has a shelf life of five years. Not only is the MBCA community embracing this mission, the Academy is getting a tremendous response from the local community and the media. WFSH (The FISH) radio will be on site during the event to generate enthusiasm and encouragement for the middle school students’ efforts.
Since the Academy will be funding this program at a cost of $13,500, the MBCA staff and faculty suggested that the whole school get behind a fundraising effort to offset the cost of purchasing the supplies and meal contents. As a result, all students, staff, and faculty have been collecting M&M tubes filled with quarters. To date, we have raised $3,718. If interested in contributing to this extraordinary effort, please send donations in to Lane Sims, Business Manager.
Compassion: The Golden Rule
A Reflection from Carina Rusk, Spanish Teacher at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy:
It was out of loving compassion that our Heavenly Father sacrificed His dear Son for the forgiveness of our sins. That love and compassion, that longing from the inner most depths of Jesus’ soul began with our
Father’s love. “He was moved with compassion.”-Matthew 9:36. Our Lord, Jesus, provided us many examples of compassionate concern; the crippled man at the pool of Bethesda; the woman condemned for adultery, and countless more.
Compassion is the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. It is an attitude of principled, consistent altruism.
The Spanish club experienced compassion first hand on our field trip with Seven Bridges Ministry when visiting and offering food and prayer for those who have been otherwise forgotten and left behind. We drive by these bridges every day as we go about our busy lives, never realizing the uncounted number of those less fortunate who call these overpasses home. Their suffering is silenced by the endless sound of passing cars.
As we arrived and began to visit with the homeless, it was admittedly difficult to do without a feeling that we should “keep our distance.” These people were dirty and their living conditions atrocious. I found myself fighting my own demons as I searched for Purell after holding their hands in prayer. It was me, after all, telling the kids not to judge and to open their hearts. That is exactly what they did.
As we stood in circles of prayer, hand in hand with those less fortunate, I heard genuine and heartfelt prayers filled with hope and love. Nearly every student led the prayer at some point and I could not have been more proud. I felt their true compassion shining through. Not even the cold and steady rain could stop them from handing out clothes, food and hope to these people. Our children are so special. We were all students that evening and we all learned much more than we could have imagined. Regardless of one’s culture or language, let us realize that we are all children of God.
A Sneak Peek at Kindergarten for Mt. Bethel Preschoolers
Miss Margie, Miss Rosalyn, Miss Karen, and Miss Dee brought their preschool classes over to the Academy to visit the library. Our own Miss Kitty read them a story and helped them complete a snowman craft before heading back to the preschool. All preschool visitors left with a souvenir bookmark that read “I Visited the MBCA Library.” What a delight it was to have these precious children visit with us.
