Pathways Learning Center

First & Second Grade

Our youngest students in grades 1-2, will receive explicit phonics and reading instruction in a small group setting.
We offer an Orton-Gillingham approach to phonics acquisition, using the Sonday phonics curriculum, that spans those two years in order to properly develop the foundational building blocks of reading fluency. Students with language delays need a specialized approach to decoding and phonics in order to become competent readers and writers. They need assistance in sorting, recognizing, and organizing the raw materials of language for thinking and use. Language elements must be taught explicitly and systematically through the Orton-Gillingham approach and in a small group setting where individual instruction can take place. Our students leave the regular classroom during Language Arts to go to the Pathways classroom. There they receive daily phonics instruction, basic grammar and writing, and reading comprehension classes. The reading comprehension class will build on the fluency skills acquired in the phonics class and introduce reading strategies in order to comprehend at a deeper level what is read. Students in Pathways are also introduced to beginning grammar concepts.

Class size is limited to 6 students in order to maximize individualized attention.
